Apparently acting on Section 189 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may have finally bowed to pressure and begun a move to make the acting governor of Taraba State, Alhaji Garba Umar, the state’s substantive governor.
This followed the inauguration yesterday of what the party called a “fact-finding committee on the political status of Taraba State”. The committee is headed by Senator Hope Uzodinma.
The third item on the terms of reference of the panel purports to empower Umar to “fast-track the process of constitutional adherence as it affects the current status of the office of the Governor of Taraba State”.
Inaugurating the committee yesterday, national chairman of the PDP Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, said it had become pertinent to intervene in the political logjam amongst PDP members in Taraba State in a bid to refix the party’s status in the state.
Tukur gave the committee two weeks to submit its report, saying the committee would also find out and report the extent of the political harmony or otherwise among the key stakeholders within the ruling PDP family in Taraba State.
Other terms of reference for the committee include that the committee interact and establish the most effective approach to reduce to the barest minimum the fears of all the contending interests in Taraba State.
The committee is also saddled with the responsibility of “ensuring that in all practical implication PDP Taraba emerge stronger and more united in responding to all the partisan challenges arising thereafter in the state”.
“Consider and report any other matter that is, in the opinion of this Committee, relevant in the resolution of the political condition of the state,” the terms of reference added.
The panel which has Senator Hope Uzodimma as chairman has Ahmed Gulak, Alhaji Shittu Mohammed, Alhaji Bala Buhari, Prof Richard King, Bolajoko Doherty, and Senator Umar Gada as the secretary.
Governor Suntai is on admission in a US hospital after the fatal crash of his plane in Yola, Adamawa State, in October 2012.
There has been intense struggle amongst stakeholders in the state, especially PDP members who have been in a battle over the state’s party machinery as well as the 2015 permutations in the state.
