Anyone familiar with the politics of Sokoto State knows that it is just a matter of time before the raging cold war between Governor Magatakarda Wamakko and former Governor Attahiru Bafarawa blow up into a full fledged war as Gov. Alu Wamakko decamped from the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressive Congress (APC). The question has been who will be the leader of the APC in Sokoto State between the two men? Gov. Wammako was the assistant governor to Attahiru Bafarawa for eight years before he became governor of Sokoto State. Relationship between the two men has never been cordial. Now in the same party it has always been obvious that the whole drama will start and end soon in disaster if two men are not careful. Now the drama we are all waiting for is unfolding.
A day after Gov. Alu Wamakko and other members of the G7 finally announced joining the APC from the PDP, exclusion of Babangida Aliyu of Niger State and Sule Lamido of Jigawa State, I asked Yusuf Dingyadi, one of Bafarawa’s people, ‘who is the leader of the APC in Sokoto State between Gov. Wamakko and Bafarawa. His reponse was that, ‘Attahiru Bafarawa is not just a national leader of the APC but he is among the founding fathers of the APC like General Muhammadu Buhari, Shekarau and Tinubu, while Gov. Wamakko decamped from the PDP to the APC. Now do the maths, as long as a founding father is in a state, another person cannot come up and be a leader of the party.’ I did the maths. My calculation was that the volcano waiting to erupt is just a matter of time.
NEWISSUES have authoritatively confirmed that there are two offices of the APC in Sokoto State, one controlled by Attahiru Bafarawa’s people and the other by Gov. Alu Wamakko’s people. Some couple of weeks ago APC youths loyal to Attahiru Bafarawa issued a statement that Gov. Alu Wammako is not the leader of APC in Sokoto State. Since then the crisis in Sokoto’s APC has veered from bad to worse.
Ibrahim Tundun Doki, Cordinator, APC Patriots in Sokoto State, told NEWISSUES that Gov. Wammako converted the PDP office to APC office two weeks before Attahiru Bafarawa came up to open his office. He reiterated that a sitting governor is the leader of the party in the state as enshrined in the APC constituition. By his conclusion Gov. Alu Wamakko is the leader of the APC in Sokoto State.
When asked if Wamakko and Bafarawa cannot work together for the interest of the party and tha State, Ibrahim Tudun Doki said Attahiru Bafarawa is a man with huge ego who is also a control freak. He wants to control everybody. On the contrary Yusuf Dingyadi, one of Attahiru Bafarawa key people, said Alu Wamakko is a good material for the APC but he cannot be the leader of the party since there is a founding father of the party in the state. He also said the APC is a merger of different parties and there was already structure in the State before Wamakko joined the party. He said the parties had offices before the merger.
From whatever angle you look at it, from whereever you stand on the matter, it is clear that more trouble awaits APC in Sokoto State.
