Despite their perfect result in the English Premier League, Manchester City again succumbed to last year’s finalist Juventus. Things looked bright when Giorgio Chiellini headed into his own net under pressure from Vincent Kompany but goals from Mario Mandzukic and Alvaro Morata have sent City fans home wondering what exactly is wrong with their side in this competition.

Gianluigi Buffon made a fine double save at 1-0 which proved to be the difference, while Nicolas Otamendi came on for the injured Kompany but afforded Morata too much space for his winner. Juventus on the other hand are struggling at home but a win away in Europe to a club like Manchester City would definitely boost their moral at home. In another development Manchester United lost to PSV in Netherland.

Cristiano Ronaldo struck a second-half hat-trick to get Real Madrid’s Champions League campaign off to a perfect start against 10-man Shakhtar Donetsk.

After missing a good chance to open the scoring, Karim Benzema took advantage of a mistake from goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov to break the deadlock.

Shakhtar’s hopes of getting back into the game were hit as Taras Stepanenko was dismissed for a second bookable offence five minutes into the second half after bringing down Sergio Ramos.

And Ronaldo put the game to bed with two quickfire penalties before heading in from close-range to seal his hat-trick and eighth goal in two matches.
