With the displacement of people from their homes, by the dreaded Boko Haram insurgents, in the local government areas, towns and villages outside Maiduguri, there has been a proliferation in the number of beggars prowling the streets of the city.

At the famous Post Office area, the cripple in the picture could be seen calling out to prospective passengers and directing Keke NAPEP tricycles plying Polo, Giwa Barracks and Damboa Road. A noble and commendable job indeed.

However, able-bodied young men and women, drug addicts especially, under the guise of being displaced, could be seen at strategic places begging for alms to feed their habits. There are genuine people involved in the practice who are actual victims of insurgency. I don’t make reference to those as theirs is a story for another day. I refer to the crafty elements who could be found close to ATM machines, petrol filing stations and other strategic locations extorting money from unsuspecting people.

Nigerians are generous and sympathetic people who love being their brothers keepers. The money these folks are given end up being used to buy substances that are harmful to their mental health. Therefore, with the increase in the number of illicit drug users comes the increase of mentally deranged fellows. Also, these societal menaces could involve in unspeakable things under the so called influence of the drugs, alcohol, marijuana and other unbelievable things they consume with relish to get ‘high’.

Unfortunately, teenagers and other minors are deeply involved in the vile practice. In future they’d become a pain in the neck of society. Observing keenly, up close, at places like the pool side of Lake Chad Hotel, Pinnacle Hotel, Artillery, Galadima, Wulari Mammy Market, Tudu, T2Class, Sahel, Loyal City, Queen Tessy, Safety, Barka Da Zuwa and so on, minors, adults and the aged could be seen in a brotherhood of alcohol, marijuana and drug consumption not minding the negative consequences. Who would advise the other when all are partners in crime? In fact, Maiduguri residents know that MOST government functionaries and elected officials are badass drug, alcohol and marijuana addicts themselves #
