A Nigerian army major and three soldiers were shot dead today in Abonnema in Akuku-Toru local government area of Rivers state less than 48 hours before crucial supplementary legislative elections are scheduled to take place in the state.
The soldiers ran into an ambush set up by militants in the volatile state. The former Governor, Rotimi Amaechi and new state governor, Nyesom Wike, have plunged the state into chaos with pockets of violence here and there because of the coming election. Both men are accusing each other of attempts to rig election and urging their supporters to clash. In a rally Governor Wike openly threatened that anyone who attempted to rig election may face death.
