A GOVERNMENT MADLY IN LOVE WITH UNFORCED ERRORS AND OWN GOALS, By Hassan Mohammed

Okay, repeat after me: May God never give us any job we don’t understand and cannot do or handle effectively. May we never be in a situation where we don’t understand our responsibilities to ourselves, our society and to our employers. In whatever job or capacity we find ourselves may we do justice to it.

I’ve long known that we are in deep trouble because we have leaders, public officers and general populace who to a large extent don’t know their jobs or responsibilities. They just go through things as they see fit. But even in a country of low expectation of public officials by the citizens, what t we are seeing and made to go through by presidents, assemblymen and women, governors, ministers and commissioners is just out of this world. It is tortuous.

How do you explain a government Minister, someone who is within earshot of the most powerful and most important public office holder in Nigeria – the president – announcing to the whole world that a company has sponsored him to go watch a football event in Europe? I bet the other African ministers did not ask him to make that announcement on their behalf that they have been sponsored by Multi-Choice of South Africa.

No wonder, no politician or public official is ready to protect us from the exploitative tendencies of MTN, DStv and all the other companies, local and international, operating in Nigeria; especially our banks. How do you expect them to think beyond these illegal perquisites and act in our beat interest? How? Not with free, everything on the table foreign trips.

It is a long held belief, an open secret, (rightly or wrongly believed) that our telecommunications companies give out hundreds of thousand Naira worth of airtime and data to our NASS members, which many believe is the reason why nothing is done to curb their tendencies for exploitation and extortion. And this charlie-charlie is openly announcing to the whole world that owners of DStv are ingratiating him. Posting:

“‘Just arriving the National Stadium of France in Paris for UEFA quarter finals between France and Iceland. Multi choice owners of Super Sports sponsored some African Ministers to watch the tournament. …. Can you predict the winner?”‘

No, sir, I’ll only predict the loser. It is YOU! And we waited close to 6 months for these people? This Oga beret “revolutionary” doesn’t know that executives in both IOC and FIFA are in trouble because of accepting this kind of Greek gifts and favours? It is either beret is incredibly careless, incredibly ignorant or incredibly stupid. No, wait. He’s a lawyer. That will only make him incredibly careless or incredibly stupid. They told us that ignorance is never an excuse. Is he saying he doesn’t know of the term “CONFLICT OF INTEREST”? Even I, a novice, know it, and its professional and legal implications.

I’m imagining a European, Canadian or an American minister acting this way; announcing that he has been sponsored to watch a football event by a corporate entity, especially one that citizens of his/her country always complain about . He/she will be lynched by his/her people. But‪#‎This_Is_Nigeria_In_Africa‬. A clown-country in a clown-continent.

Baba needs to act. But like the jobs’ secret cult, this too will result in total and complete silence.
