Now Garba Shehu, the spokesperson to President Buhari, is forced to tell the world that Mr. Buhari’s statement that his wife belongs to the kitchen, room and the other room, whatever that means, is just a joke.
President Muhammadu Buhari goofed, of all places, in front of one of the most powerful woman in the world.
This is a man who is from a country where Islamist group Boko Haram share the same ideal that women belong to bedroom and kitchen and have no other place than bedroom and kitchen.
In fact just as Mr. Buhari was planning to leave Nigeria for Germany, there was news of the Emir of Katsina marrying off a 14 years old girl that the Emirate Council told the media that she converted to Islam.
President Buhari came from the part of Nigeria where women are most marginalized and suppressed, an areas where child wedding, forced wedding, and belief that the female child has no right getting an education is still quite popular among the populace.
Kayode Ogundamisi, one of Mr. Buhari’s hardcore supporter captured this aptly when he wrote that, “The president should know that his distorted thinking that Nigerian women or any woman for that matter belong in the bedroom or kitchen is unacceptable.”
Other citizens took to social media to condemn the president’s ‘primitive’ and ‘misogynist’ remark about his wife, reported Premium Times.
Barely 48 hours ago, 21 Chibok girls who were kidnapped over two years ago by Boko Haram when they were writing their final examination in school, were released to a swap/money deal with Boko Haram, such statement would be disheartening to their parent and people have female children.
Just two days ago the social media in Nigeria was completely taken over by “We Love Girls.”
President Buhari may get away with such statement in a Nigeria where people never take such statement as serious as they should, where women still don’t have a voice, but internationally he has already done the damage to his image.
The president has succeeded in ridiculing Nigeria in the eyes of the world.
