How To Defeat Boko Haram, By George Onmonya Daniel

NEWISSUES, Abuja

Buhari supporters have taken over the social media celebrating the defeat of Boko Haram. For most of them the capture of Sambisa is a great achievement. Perhaps, it is an achievement and it is worth celebrating but it is neither the end or the beginning of the end for Boko Haram. For an administration faced with economic crisis that has left the nation in the worst recession in its history, to grab at anything as an achievement is one way the supporters of Buhari want to cover up what his critics are referring to as crass cluelessness and incompetence of an administration riddled with corruption, confusion and almost total lack of direction completely contrary to what Nigerians expected of President Buhari.

To defeat Boko Haram, the Nigerian government must follow the United State way of how they tackled Al-Qaeda. In fact in the beginning as the United States attacked Afghanistan one month after 9/11, and went straight for Osama bin Laden, after a friend indeed, Mullah Omar, the leader of the Taliban refused to hand him over to the United States as requested. Osama bin Laden, the face of Al-Qaeda vanished through Tora Bora, the last place he was seen by US intelligence, and stayed out of sight. Afterwards he releases videos from time to time, some other members run Al-Qaeda, but the US knew to deliver a deadly blow on Al-Qaeda, they had to get Osama Bin Laden. In fact just one month after hitting the Taliban, they dispersed and were on the run. The US captured Afghanistan.

And they got him about a decade later. If you want to know how they got him please go look for the film ZERO DARK THIRTY. The taken out Osama Bin Laden was the psychological blow that set Al-Qaeda back many years and delivered the most deadly injury to the psyche of the terror network.

The Nigerian government need to go for Shekau. They need to get Shekau and give him the Osama Bin Laden treatment. Even at that Boko Haram may not completely be over but it would devastate the organization.

If Shekau end up dying a natural death, Boko Haram would use it for propaganda. Allah has taken him. They would get another deranged leader who would believe he in invisible and invincible as Allah would protect him as he protected Shekau.

When we celebrate the capture of Sambisa, has Sambisa even been captured? We must tell ourselves the truth. The Nigeria government must get Shekau and put a bullet through his forehead before this war may be won. It is not an easy one, we know, it is a difficult one, and we must commend the army for how far they have come so far in dealing with Boko Haram.

We must not also forget that gve government must tackle the ideology that breed extremism. These types of ideology are still powerful all over Northern Nigeria.
