Since I became a lawyer, and even before I became a lawyer, I have never seen one person who reported a crime to the Nigeria Police Force and was not asked by the Police to pay money before real investigation can take place.
In Nigeria, it is the victims of crimes that fund police investigation and prosecution. In some instances, it is the criminal suspects that “mobilise” the Police. That is why criminals hardly get punished.
When you go to the Police station, they will tell you that they do not have vehicle or that there is no fuel in their vehicle. Even after the police have concluded their investigation, whether successful or not, the Complainant will be asked by the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) to come and close the “Case File” and we all know what that means.
I don’t want to talk about bail. I have given up on that. Anyone that says that bail is free in this country is a LIAR.
Nigeria is not a normal society.
President Buhari has not done anything tangible to change the structural and institutional decay facing this country. Forget the noise, nothing serious is working. The government has failed at all levels.
When the Reformer comes, we will know.
