When the Governor of Zamfara State was in Abuja yesterday with President Muhammadu Buhari, one of his indigenes, Ibrahim Mansur, was sharing pictures of the tap water in Zamfara that looks like pap (kunu) on Facebook. It went viral when Daily Nigerian, an online newspaper carried the story. Ironically, it was in Buhari’s Aso Rock that Governor Abdulaziz Yari told the world that meningitis in his state which had claimed the lives of many was because of their distancing themselves from Allah. He backed it up with the Holy Qur’an when the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, criticized such ridiculous statement.
Some of these governors who are more in a Abuja than their own state don’t know exactly what goes on in their state or rather don’t really care. Mr. Yari’s statement on Meningitis shows such ignorance and arrogance. I just wonder what he would say about this water coming out from tap in his state now. Allah’s punishment? Such characters may be tempted to say so in a country like Nigeria where some of the things politicians say or do are funnier than their standup comedians.
How on earth do you expect people to drink such water and not get poisoned? This is a cholera prone state for goodness sake. You want to cause an epidemic and then blame it on the people distancing themselves from God?
I wouldn’t have believed this water story if I hadn’t seen similar thing in Kano. When I was in the University in Kano in the late 90s, the water running from the tap in Kano was brown, not as terrible as this Zamfara pap water but it was brown and when you fetch it and leave it in a bucket for a while, brown sand settles under the bucket. I used to live in Shagari Quarters and anybody who lived there about 1996 to 1999 and early 2000 should remember. That was when we stopped drinking tap water and now buy sachet water popularly refer to as ‘pure water’ in Nigeria even though there is nothing pure about most of such packaged waters.
The Governor of Zamfara State should be embarrassed by this, honestly, and do something about it immediately. People in Zamfara State should be screaming about this. It is your families that would take this water. Not everybody can afford pure water, some people still depend on tap water.
What is worrying is that I haven’t been seeing people in Zamfara complaining much about these things. As long as you don’t complain and shout about certain unacceptable things your politicians would continue to treat you as shit and that why Nigerian politicians treat us as shit.
I wonder whether this time the governor would interpret this as continuation of Allah’s punishment as narrated in the Holy Book when God punished Pharoah with plagues after he asked the Egyptian King to let his people leave Egypt. The puniahments included some form of epidemic and the Nile turning to pap like this that even the frogs couldn’t live inside but had to leave and entered the city of Egypt.
I have heard all sorts of things in Nigeria coming out of the mouth of politicians. It wouldn’t be surprising if Governor Yari throw another missile again.
