The African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition looked dangerous and formidable as the one opposition that may upset the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the coming election early next year, until Peter Obi and Kwankwaso’s abrupt departure from the party.
Now the main opposition parties have really not gotten any chance with Tinubu. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the president of Nigeria, has about 30 governors out of 36 in the states. Their support alone would give him 25% in virtually every state with APC governor.
The tension has always been Obi and Atiku. When many Nigerians are expecting Atiku to support Obi as it is the turn of the South in the gentlemanly agreement that exist between the North and the South, many have said Atiku would not bulge, he wants to be president at all cost as it is his turn like Tinubu. Many expect this fallout. Rufai Hussaini, famous Arise TV anchor, said Atiku will contest 2027 and if he loses contest against in 2031. It has always been his ambition to be president and any coalition he is forming is for himself.
ATIKU Abubakar’s personal ambition is more important to him than anything else. You cannot form a coalition with Atiku. He is not willing to make sacrifices for a larger goal to be achieved, he is not patient, he is not a visionary, the only vision he has is seeing himself in Aso Rock, nobody else, and he is ready to jeopardise what seems plausible and possible. Unlike Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Atiku is a perfect power monger. Tinubu’s first experiment was Nuhu Ribadu. He sponsored Nuhu to contest for President, then when the opportunity came he ensure Buhari got the ticket. It paid off. Atiku wouldn’t make that kind of sacrifice. He is into himself. This is why the ADC and the coalition has failed.
Another one is Kwankwaso. Kwankwaso is desperately looking for power, and he stated that he was willing to be vice to Peter Obi long time ago. Obi needs a popular Northern personality. He has to dump Datti Ahmed who has no political value. Kwankwaso has a huge followership in Kano that doesn’t cover the entire north, sure he will boost Obi’s interest in Arewa. However, the breaking up of the ADC coalition doesn’t help either OBI’s camp or Atiku’s camp.
