The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has dismissed claims that Muslims are plotting to eradicate Christianity in Nigeria, describing such allegations as false and dangerous to national unity.
Speaking during an interfaith dialogue organised by the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) in Abuja, the Sultan said there is no agenda to Islamise Nigeria or remove Christianity from the country. He stressed that both religions have coexisted for decades and must continue to promote peace, tolerance, and mutual understanding.
“We are not in any position whatsoever to remove Christianity from Nigeria. It is not possible,” the Sultan stated while urging Nigerians to reject divisive narratives capable of fueling religious tension.
He also called on religious leaders and citizens to focus on strengthening national cohesion and peaceful coexistence instead of spreading suspicion and hate among different faith groups.
The remarks come amid recurring debates and allegations surrounding religion and politics in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
